Workers 'guilty over taking leave'

A third of office workers do not take all their holiday leave, with some employees actually feeling guilty about asking for time off, new research has shown.

Almost one in seven take their full leave entitlement only because they are forced to by their company, a survey of 1,000 workers by employment firm Adecco also revealed.

Half of those questioned said they would cancel a holiday for a work commitment and a similar number felt guilty about leaving colleagues "in the lurch" when they were off.

Alex Fleming, operations director at Adecco, said: "UK workers seem to have adopted a range of bad habits associated with their holiday leave. It is important to remember that annual leave is a legal entitlement and people should be encouraged to use it.

"It seems employees are reluctant to take their holiday leave and this could be for a range of reasons, including fears over job security and leaving their colleagues with increased stress."
