X Factor hopeful quizzed over rape

A pop hopeful who has been questioned by police about an allegation of rape has tried out for the new series of The X Factor.

The man, in his 20s, was at an audition for the ITV show last month attended by panellists Simon Cowell, Cheryl Cole, Mel B and Louis Walsh.

It is not clear whether his performance on the programme will make it to the series, which begins later in the summer.

He is understood to have gone to police voluntarily and had not been charged with any offence. He also denies any wrongdoing.

The programme's representatives declined to comment.
