A Co Down man has been crowned the world champion ploughman after ploughing to perfection at the championships in Lithuania.

David Gill from Hillsborough, (pictured above) with the coveted Golden Plough he won in Lithuania, is piped into a special celebration function by Alan McAnally from Ballyboley Pipe Band.

David Gill beat off stiff competition from the world's best ploughmen from 29 countries to gain the top spot after two days' ploughing in the conventional section, over which he accumulated a massive 369.5 points.

David is the sixth local man to hold the Golden Plough title, which Northern Ireland has won nine times.

In the reversible section David Wright from Magherafelt gained a credible third place behind England's Simon Witty and Andrew Mitchell, from Scotland.

The Northern Ireland team arrived in Kaunas, Lithuania, a week ahead of the championships to prepare; they were accompanied by their coach Ronnie Coulter, from Hillsborough.

After the first day's ploughing on stubble land, David Gill finished in the top spot, and then took an excellent second place after ploughing on grassland on day two.

Second place went to Scot, Andrew Mitchell with 351 points.

Both men were congratulated by the Northern Ireland Ploughing Association at a special function in The Chimney Corner Hotel.

They will both take part in the 64th Northern Ireland International ploughing championships at Eglinton on October 19-20.
