Victims’ service consultation gets go-ahead
The Stormont Executive has finally given the green light to consultations on a new service for victims and survivors.
A 10-week period for comments on the delayed proposal is likely to get under way in the next few weeks. Due to be in place by next spring, the so-called Victims and Survivors Service is designed to become “the delivery mechanism for funding work with victims and survivors”.
The plan is for it to be constituted as a non-departmental public body, which the Executive said would allow it to work at arm’s length from Government.
A statement said quango status would also give the service “greater flexibility to respond to the needs of victims and survivors while at the same time retain full responsibility for the use of public funds”.
The lengthy postponement of Executive level decisions has caused major funding problems for many victims’ groups.
