Weekend of tragedy on roads
A man was killed and two men were recovering in hospital last night after a fatal accident in Co Down.
The accident on the Ballygowan Road in Comber brings to three the number of people killed on roads in Northern Ireland over the weekend.
In a separate incident, Christopher Nicholl (20), from Church Lane, Ballymena, died when his motorbike collided with a car on the Largy Road, Portglenone, at about 5pm on Saturday. Another man was taken to hospital, though his injuries were not thought to be life-threatening.
In Co Tyrone, two men were injured, one seriously, in a single-car accident in Castlederg which happened at about 3am on Sunday.
And a man, who died in a road accident in Co Down on Friday, has been named as Philip Kennedy (22). The Downpatrick man died in a collision between a tractor and a motorbike on the Tullymurry Straight between Downpatrick and Clough.
Detectives last night appealed for witnesses to the crash in Comber, which was reported to police just after 6.20pm yesterday.
The man killed was travelling in the car with the two other men who were taken to hospital. The driver of the second vehicle did not require hospital treatment.
Meanwhile, a Belfast woman has died following a horrific highway smash in the United States on Thursday. Ellen McGurk (39), lost her life after the vehicle she was travelling in was involved in a head-on collision with a pickup truck in the Bastrop County area of Texas.
A Texan woman was later arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
Paul McGurk, also 39, and friends Patrick McAteer (55) and Sharon Sanders (59), were injured in the crash. They were later treated in hospital, but their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
