At least 15 people have died after a tourist bus plunged into a ravine in northern China.

The official Xinhua News Agency said the accident happened when the bus, carrying 33 people, crashed off a highway in Shanxi province.

Xinhua said the bus was not full, but it did not give any further information.

State television showed video of the crumpled bus at the bottom of the rocky ravine.

Road safety is a serious problem in China, with many accidents caused by poorly maintained roads and bad driving habits.
