15 pilgrims killed after bus plunges 380ft into Indian river

At least 15 Hindu pilgrims have been killed with another eight still missing after a bus plunged nearly 380ft into a river in mountainous northern India.

Another seven people were injured in the incident in Uttarakhand state, nearly 250 miles north-east of New Delhi.

The cause of Tuesday's accident is not yet known.

Uttarakhand is a popular summer holiday destination for tourists seeking to escape the heat of India's plains.

It is also a religious pilgrimage site with four temple towns in the Garhwal Himalayan range.

More than 110,000 people are killed annually on India's roads. Most crashes are attributed to reckless driving, poorly maintained roads and ageing vehicles.
