17 die as truck plunges into gorge

Seventeen people returning from a wedding were killed when the truck they were travelling in fell into a gorge in northern India, police said.

Another 28 people were injured in the accident near the town of Kaladungi, almost 250 miles (400km) north-east of New Delhi, according to police officer Dinesh Pant.

The truck's driver lost control of the vehicle following a brake failure on a mountainous road in Uttarakhand state and was among those killed, Mr Pant said.

The bride and groom survived because they were in another vehicle, he added.

India has the world's deadliest roads, with more than 110,000 people killed annually. Most crashes are blamed on reckless driving, poorly maintained roads and ageing vehicles.
