19 UN staffers detained in Syria

The United Nations says two staff members detained in Syria have been released in the last few days, but 19 are still being held.

UN spokesman Martin Nesirky said yesterday the United Nations is trying to secure the release of all its personnel "as soon as possible".

He said most of the detained UN staff members are Syrians.

Deputy spokesman Farhan Haq said later that the two detainees who were freed were Syrian. One worked for the UN agency dealing with Palestinian refugees, and the other for UN Habitat.

Mr Nesirky would not say who was holding any of the UN personnel.
