2 soldiers die in drive-by shooting

Two soldiers have been shot dead in Egypt

Two soldiers have been shot dead and three others injured in a drive-by shooting on a desert road in northern Egypt, the state news agency said.

The report by Mena said the attack took place on the road to the Suez Canal city of Ismailia, when gunmen from a speeding car opened fire at a military checkpoint yesterday evening.

A similar checkpoint attack in Ismailia last week also killed two soldiers.

A militant group calling itself Ansar Beit al-Maqdis - Arabic for Partisans of Jerusalem - has been active in the area, attacking military and police targets.

The group also claimed responsibility for last month's bombing of a military intelligence compound in Ismailia. The city is 75 miles (120km) east of the Egyptian capital, Cairo.
