21 killed in India bus river plunge

At least 21 people died when a crowded bus veered off the road and plunged into a river in central India, a news agency has said.

Press Trust of India said rescue workers scouring the river pulled out 21 bodies from the Bagdi River in Madhya Pradesh state overnight.

Police official T Dharma Rao said at least 40 other passengers swam ashore or were pulled out of the swift-moving river after the crash late on Wednesday.

India has the highest annual road death toll in the world, according to the World Health Organisation.

More than 110,000 people die annually nationwide in road accidents, according to police figures.
