Twenty-three people were killed and 19 others injured when a ceiling collapsed at a military barracks in Siberia, the Russian defence ministry said.

Rescuers searched for hours for men trapped under the debris of the airborne troops training centre in Omsk after the incident in the early hours.

The defence ministry said the bodies of 23 missing people had been found under the debris by late morning and the search was called off.

Ten seriously injured men have been sent to Moscow for treatment.

The defence ministry would not speculate on the cause of the accident.

Spokesman General-Major Igor Konashenkov said the building was renovated in 2013 but he insisted that could not have caused the collapse.
