50 killed in military base clash

Nigerian soldiers have killed at least 50 insurgents who stormed a Nigerian military base.

The Defence Ministry said six soldiers, including the commanding officer, died while repelling the attack on the military base on Friday, which witnesses say involved hundreds of extremists. The insurgents also attacked a police station in Damboa, a town in Borno state.

The daring move appeared to be a reprisal attack after a punishing air raid 24 hours earlier caused Boko Haram Islamic extremists to suffer heavy casualties, according to an officer.

More than 2,000 people have died so far this year in the 5-year-old Islamic uprising.
