70 vigilantes arrested in Mexico

Police in the Mexican western state of Michoacan have arrested 70 suspected vigilantes, including one of the founders of the "self-defence" movement, for carrying unauthorized weapons.

Michoacan prosecutors say Dr Jose Manuel Mireles and the other armed men were detained in the villages of La Mira and Acalpican.

Dr Mireles is the only "self-defence" founding member who has not joined a new rural police force set up by the federal government to regain control of the state.

Michoacan is the Knights Templar drug cartel home base. The gang has been chased out of many Michoacan towns by vigilante groups.

Since January, the federal government has been trying to bring back law and order to the agriculturally rich state.
