Abuja blast death toll rises to 22

The death toll from a bomb attack on a shopping centre in the Nigerian capital has risen to 22 after an injured victim died in hospital.

The government said soldiers shot and killed one suspect as he tried to escape the scene in Abuja, and police detained a second suspect.

The explosion was the latest in a series of violent attacks blamed on Boko Haram Islamic extremists.

On Tuesday, the extremists over-ran a military checkpoint in the north-east and killed at least 21 soldiers. They also took some troops hostage, witnesses said.

Boko Haram attracted international condemnation for the April mass abduction of more than 200 schoolgirls, and is blamed for this week's kidnappings of another 90 people.
