Abuse accused held in Philippines

A 74-year-old British man living in the Philippines for 10 years has been arrested to face charges over the abuse of a 14-year-old boy in the United Kingdom.

Immigration commission spokeswoman Elaine Tan says Douglas Michael Slade was arrested by immigration agents on Wednesday at his home in northern Angeles City - where he has been a permanent resident for 10 years.

Ms Tan said the British Embassy requested Slade be apprehended to face the abuse charges.

She added that Slade was previously arrested in five child abuse and child pornography cases in Angeles City - but all the charges were dismissed.

Slade denies the charges, saying they were "make believe" and a "magical fantasy".

Ms Tan said he is being held at an immigration detention centre pending resolution of the deportation proceedings.
