Afghan police numbers 'unknown'
Afghan authorities do not know how many police they have or whether everyone getting a police salary is actually doing the job, says a US government audit.
The audit by Herbert Richardson, special inspector general for Afghanistan reconstruction, says the country's police rolls and payrolls cannot be verified because of poor record keeping.
Mr Richardson told a Washington hearing that that means there could be ghost employees collecting pay, people collecting double pay or other fraud and waste.
The United States and other international donors are spending billions of dollars to build up Afghan security forces so they can one day take over their own security.
