Amazon boss Bezos in airlift drama
Amazon tycoon Jeff Bezos was airlifted from a cruise ship in the Galapagos Islands on New Year's Day after suffering intense pain because of a kidney stone, it has emerged.
Captain Santiago Rubio, commander of the port of Santa Cruz, said Mr Bezos was on a cruise not far from the island when he felt the pain in his stomach area.
The navy sent doctors to examine Mr Bezos and determined that it was a kidney stone attack. Capt Rubio authorised a helicopter to take the Amazon founder and Washington Post owner from the ship.
Mr Bezos was taken to Santa Cruz port and from there, a short flight to Baltra island where his private jet was waiting to take him to the US for medical treatment.
Amazon spokesman Drew Herdener said no surgery was required and Mr Bezos was feeling well.
He said Mr Bezos sent an email saying: "Galapagos: five stars. Kidney stones: zero stars."
