Guantanamo detainee to be charged over USS Cole attack

Tuesday, 1 July 2008

The US Government says it plans to charge a detainee at Guantanamo Bay with organising and directing the bombing of a US warship eight years ago.

The Pentagon says it will be seeking the death penalty against Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, a Saudi citizen of Yemeni descent who has been held at Guantanamo since 2006.

Al-Nashiri will face a controversial military tribunal.

Seventeen US sailors were killed when a group of men detonated an explosives-laden boat along the USS Cole in October 2000 while it was in Aden for a fuel stop.
