The girlfriend of one of the two Australian tourists missing in Mexico said he had visited the country often and never had any problems before.

Dean Lucas and Adam Coleman had left Edmonton, Canada, and were scheduled to arrive on November 21 in the city of Guadalajara.

The surfers were driving through the north-western state of Sinaloa when they disappeared. A burned-out van with two charred bodies inside has been identified as Mr Coleman's.

Mr Coleman's girlfriend told local media he had previously travelled by bus around Mexico.

Andrea Gomez said Mr Coleman brought the van down because he was planning to stay in Guadalajara, the western city where she lives.

Ms Gomez said while it has not been confirmed, "it's a 99% probability" that the bodies will be identified as them, adding "everything matches."
