Bel earns ringing endorsement at Gotham Awards

Bel Powley has scooped the best actress award at the Gotham Independent Film Awards .

The 23-year-old British actress showed star quality for her role in coming-of-age drama The Diary Of A Teenage Girl.

The best actor award went to Paul Dano for his performance as Brian Wilson in Love & Mercy a nd there were also Gotham Award Tribute honours for Helen Mirren, Robert Redford and Carol director Todd Haynes at the New York event.

Tom McCarthy's i nvestigative journalism drama Spotlight, about the Boston Globe's Pulitzer Prize-winning reporting on sex abuse by Catholic priests, won best feature and best screenplay prizes and also earned a special award for best ensemble.

The 25th annual Gotham Awards were held at Cipriani's Wall Street in lower Manhattan and hosted by Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson of Broad City.
