Black man shot dead by US officer

A 19-year-old black man has died after being shot by a US police officer.

Mike Koval, police chief in Madison, Wisconsin, says the man was shot on Friday after an altercation with the officer. He did not know if the dead man was armed.

Family members identified him to local media as Tony Robinson.

Mr Koval told the media that police were called because the man was jumping into traffic. He says the officer went to an apartment where the man had gone, then went inside after hearing a disturbance. He says the officer shot the man after he assaulted the officer.

The state Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating the shooting.
