Brazil returns hazardous waste to Britain
Thursday, 6 August 2009
Brazil said today it was returning 1,500 tons of hazardous waste that arrived from Britain labelled as recyclable plastic.
The Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources said on its website that 89 containers left for the UK from the port of Santos yesterday.
The containers arrived between February and May in three ports in the states of Rio Grande do Sul and Sao Paulo.
They were labelled recyclable plastic, but were found to be packed with domestic and hospital waste including batteries, used syringes, condoms, old medicine and dirty nappies.
