British embassy vehicle hit by suicide bomb in Afghan capital Kabul

A suicide bomber has hit a British embassy vehicle in the Afghan capital Kabul.

The vehicle was hit by an explosion in the country's capital Kabul. There were reports that the attack was staged by a suicide bomber on a motorcycle.

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that a British Embassy vehicle has been attacked in Kabul. A number of staff have been injured.

"We are working with the Afghan authorities to establish details of the incident."

She was unable to give any details of the conditions of those hurt.

At least five Afghan civilians were killed and up to 34 others hurt, officials in the country said.

The attack caused parts of Kabul to shake and sent a plume of dust and smoke into the air.

Deputy interior minister General Mohammad Ayub Salangi said: "Foreign vehicles were targeted by a suicide attacker on a motorcycle."

The Taliban were reported to have claimed the attack.

Mustafa Deveci, a journalist in the area, told Sky News the attack took place on a "very busy" road.

He said: "I saw five or six civilian cars were damaged."
