A British woman has been found apparently strangled in her home on St Martin, investigators in the French Caribbean territory said.
Police commander Stephane Brunet said a male suspect is being detained in jail on the neighbouring French island of Guadeloupe. He would not disclose any more details about the suspect, saying the investigation is still under way.
Mr Brunet said a post-mortem examination on the body of Lianne Burns should be completed within days.
The 43-year-old British citizen was an employee of a local tour company in St Martin, which shares the island with Dutch St Maarten.
Friends and colleagues said Ms Burns moved to St Martin about 12 years ago after working for a cruise ship company.
Robert Luckock, who worked with her at Rendezvous Tours, said: "She was always upbeat and smiling and her London cockney accent added to the charm.
"It was a pleasure to work with her and she earned the respect of everyone. It's a very sad loss."
