Candidate reveals rape ordeal as she condemns Trump comments
A South Dakota Democrat running for the US House of Representatives has revealed she was raped at college, in an essay that condemned Donald Trump's predatory comments about women.
In the essay on the website Medium, Paula Hawks said condoning such behaviour enabled sexual assault at colleges and in the workplace.
Ms Hawks, 41, said in the essay that she was raped by "a person in a position of authority" while at college.
In a telephone interview, she said it happened in 1995 while she was at South Dakota State University. She did not report it to police, but told KELO Radio News that the man got into trouble mutliple times and so "justice has been served on that person".
Ms Hawks says she was "outraged" by the Trump tape and just had to speak out.
She is challenging Republican House member Kristi Noem, who has said she will vote for Mr Trump because he will sign conservative legislation.
Ms Noem said she was "heartbroken" by what happened to Ms Hawks but stood by her support of Mr Trump.
