Cargo ship stranded off Cyprus

A British helicopter helped rescue people from a ship stranded off Cyprus

A cargo ship has become stranded in rough weather off the coast of Cyprus.

Police said the Sierra Leone-flagged Edro III left the Cypriot port of Limassol for the Greek island of Rhodes but ran into trouble about 10 miles off Paphos, in the island's south-west.

A helicopter from a British base near Limassol, on the south coast, airlifted seven of the nine-member crew to the island where they were given precautionary medical check-ups.

Police said the captain and chief engineer stayed on board the ship.

The crew consists of seven Albanians and two Egyptians.

Authorities said they will tow the ship back to port.
