Crackdown as 61 killed by drinking deadly bath lotion
Russian president Vladimir Putin has asked his government to restrict sales of surrogate alcohol after at least 61 people died from methanol poisoning in the Siberian city of Irkutsk.
The deaths were directly attributed to the consumption of counterfeit bath lotion.
Bottles with the lotion carried warnings that they were not for internal use, but the labels said the product contained ethyl alcohol, not deadly methanol.
Mr Putin issued an order to restrict sales of all liquids that contain up to 25% of alcohol and consider raising duties on such products in an attempt to restrict cheap surrogate alcohol.
Some 40 people are still in hospital for methanol poisoning.
