Crowds watch Thanksgiving parade

Thousands of spectators have lined the route of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade to watch the procession of giant inflated characters wind their way through Manhattan.

The spectacle features six new giant balloons this year, including Thomas the Tank Engine, Paddington Bear and the Red Mighty Morphin Power Ranger.

Under grey skies and drizzle, bursts of confetti were shot from canisters to get the show rolling.

The honour of leading the parade went to the Pride of the Mountains Marching Band from Western Carolina University.

The musicians were hoping to set two records: one for the most cymbal players (55) and one for the largest band (505 members).
