Day passes in a flash for Samoa
The South Pacific nation of Samoa has jumped forward in time as it crossed westward over the international dateline to align itself with regional trading partners.
At the stroke of midnight last night, time in Samoa leapt forward to December 31 - New Year's Eve. For Samoa's 186, citizens, Friday, December 3, 211, will simply cease to exist.
The time zone has proved problematic because it puts Samoa nearly a full day behind key trading partners Australia and New Zealand.
