Death toll from Florida care home that lost air con during hurricane rises to 14

Two women who lived at a Florida nursing home that lost air conditioning during Hurricane Irma have died, becoming the 13th and 14th fatalities linked to the facility.

Hollywood police spokeswoman Miranda Grossman said Cecilia Franco, 90, and Francesca Andrade, 95, died from ailments suffered when the Rehabilitation Centre in Hollywood Hills lost power on September 10.

On September 13, eight residents died and others were evacuated from the sweltering home after the electric transformer that powered the air conditioning was damaged during the storm.

Ms Grossman did not say exactly when the women died, but she said police are treating the deaths as part of the criminal investigation.

The Miami Herald said Ms Franco's husband Miguel Antonio Franco, who also lived at the home, died on September 13.

No one has been charged.

The state has suspended the home's licence. Last week, the facility laid off 245 workers, including doctors, nurses, therapists and others.
