Defeat sparks off reshuffle for Nicolas Sarkozy
French president Nicolas Sarkozy is expected to rebuild his government this week after what seemed certain to be a stinging defeat in the second round of regional elections last night.
The seriousness of the reshuffle will depend on the extent of the rout of Mr Sarkozy's centre right party and its allies. Early results last night suggested that they might just have clung on in Alsace to avoid a Left and Green “grand slam” in all 22 regions of Metropolitan France.
All the same, Prime Minister Francois Fillon is expected to offer his resignation today. Mr Sarkozy is likely to ask him to form a reworked government in an attempt to mollify centre-right voters.
