Deported Nazis still claim benefits
Suspected Nazi war criminals kicked out of the United States are still claiming social security benefits, it has emerged.
Now members of the House of Representatives' ways and means and Senate finance committees have introduced bills to close a loophole in the law that has allowed former Nazis to receive the payments even after being forced to leave the US.
The move followed an investigation by the Associated Press news agency that revealed millions of dollars in benefits had been paid to dozens of former Nazis. At least four were alive, living in Europe on social security, the probe found.
Separate bills to terminate benefits to former Nazis were introduced in the House and Senate last week.
The White House has signalled its support for the legislation.
