Designer to the stars Arnold Scaasi dies at age of 85
Designer Arnold Scaasi, whose flamboyant creations adorned first ladies from Mamie Eisenhower to Laura Bush and film stars from Elizabeth Taylor to Barbra Streisand, has died.
Scaasi died early yesterday at New York Presbyterian Hospital of cardiac arrest. He was 85.
Until he closed his dress business in 2010, Scaasi - which was his given surname, Isaacs, spelled backwards - specialised in made-to-order clothes, favouring ornate, brilliantly coloured fabrics and trimmings like beads and feathers.
Scaasi's most famous outfit was a flimsy lace trouser suit designed for Streisand's Oscar appearance in 1969, when she won the best actress award for Funny Girl in a tie with Katharine Hepburn.
