Donald Trump's Republican presidential bid has received the backing of Sarah Palin.

Palin, the former Alaska governor and 2008 vice-presidential nominee, said in the Trump campaign statement: "I am proud to endorse Donald J Trump for President of the United States of America."

The businessman, who leads the Republican race, said her backing was "coveted" and "influential".

“I am greatly honored to receive Sarah’s endorsement,” Mr. Trump said in a statement.

“She is a friend, and a high-quality person whom I have great respect for. I am proud to have her support.”
