Drink-driver jailed for car crash hours after his ban
A motorist who was caught over the limit the same day he had been disqualified for a previous drink-driving offence was jailed for eight months at the Magistrates Court in Londonderry yesterday and banned for 10 years.
Richard Barton (52), from Dundooan Park in Coleraine, was originally disqualified from driving for three years and given a three-month suspended prison sentence in the same court on January 27 after he was caught drink-driving last November 28.
The court was told that on January 27, after his court appearance, Barton went to a nearby bar.
Several hours later a member of the public rang the police to report that a man he’d seen staggering from the bar had got into a car and then driven the vehicle for several feet before crashing it into a kerb at Duddy’s Court.
When the police arrived Barton was arrested and breath-tested. He was found to be three times over the drink-driving limit.
