English cyclist killed in Bolivia

An Englishwoman has died after being struck by a van as she rode a bicycle in southern Bolivia near the border with Chile.

The woman was named as 39-year-old Greta Sharon Bridgnan by Col Marcelo Tejerina of Bolivia's border police.

He said she was cycling with her husband in a remote desert region about 430 kilometres ( 274 miles) south of the capital of La Paz. Her husband was not harmed in the Saturday afternoon accident.

Authorities did not know the couple's hometown.

The British Embassy in La Paz provided no details about the woman, including her name, and said only that it was helping her family with consular services.

Bolivia's southern desert region is a major tourist attraction.
