Eric Clapton auctions Slowhand guitar to help Texas musician

A guitar owned by British singer-songwriter Eric Clapton has sold at auction to help pay the medical bills for a Texas musician whose wife recently died of leukaemia.

The 2014 Fender Stratocaster raised 45,000 dollars (£34,320) at the auction in Dallas, to a telephone bidder.

Heritage Auctions said the buyer requested anonymity, but the bid was more than twice what was expected.

It was one of two guitars Clapton played last year at his Slowhand at 70 concert at London's Royal Albert Hall.

Money from the auction will help Johnny Nicholas cover medical bills from his wife's leukaemia treatment and support leukaemia research.

Nicholas is a member of the Grammy Award-winning band Asleep at the Wheel.
