Former Argentine president Nestor Kirchner died yesterday after suffering a fatal heart attack, state television has said.
The political leader and husband of Argentina's president Cristina Fernandez collapsed in the city of Calafate.
Kirchner was a likely candidate in next year's presidential elections as well as being the head of a union of South American nations, a congressman and leader of the Peronist party.
The 60-year-old died after he was rushed to the Formenti de Calafate hospital while having a severe heart attack.
“It was a sudden death,” his personal doctor, Luis Buonomo, told reporters.
Kirchner had undergone an angioplasty to widen a heart artery after a heart attack in September.
