Exiled Aristide on way to Haiti

The plane carrying former Haitian president Jean-Bertrand Aristide's back to the country he once ran has stopped off in Senegal for refuelling before he makes the final leg of his journey back to the Caribbean island nation, South Africa's foreign ministry said.

The plane landed in Dakar and is expected to arrive in Haiti later on Friday.

Declaring the "great day has arrived," Aristide left South Africa on Thursday night, ending seven years in exile, with his wife and two daughters.

He had been ousted in a rebellion in 2004 but remains hugely popular in his impoverished Caribbean nation.

US President Barack Obama had tried to keep the controversial figure away from his country until it holds a presidential election on Sunday, fearing he could destabilise the process.
