A five-year-old boy pulled his two-year-old brother out of a burning lorry following a crash that killed their father, police in Houston said.

The truck was a moving van and the family was relocating to Galveston, Texas, when the crash occurred.

Police say the boys were passengers in the truck being driven by their father on Interstate 45 early on Friday morning when the vehicle ran into a guardrail and a metal pillar.

The truck rolled over and burst into flames. Investigators say the father died at the scene after he apparently was thrown out of the vehicle.

Both boys have been taken to hospital - the two-year-old suffered severe burns, while his older brother had minor injuries.

Police say they have not been able to contact the boys' mother as yet.
