Floods alert after US snowstorms

US forecasters have warned of the threat of floods after a massive seven feet of snow fell in the Buffalo area of western New York state, killing at least 12 people.

After the three-day onslaught the sun came out but it was followed by predictions of flooding caused by rain, temperatures of up to 60F and blocked drainage systems.

The National Weather Service issued a flood watch for Sunday to Wednesday.

Governor Andrew Cuomo said the state was sending in pumps, boats, helicopters and high-axle vehicles that can operate in four to five feet of water, just in case.

The snow remained a huge challenge. Officials were urging people to put off non-essential travel so removal efforts could progress.
