Gunmen shot and killed former El Salvador national football team player Alfredo Pacheco at a petrol station.

The Attorney General's Office said unidentified assailants in a vehicle approached Pacheco and some of his friends in the city of Santa Ana early on Sunday and opened fire.

Pacheco was killed, while two people accompanying him were injured.

Pacheco was one of the players on El Salvador's national team who was banned for life by the Salvadoran Soccer Federation in 2013 - a punishment ratified by FIFA - for match-fixing.

He played for the Salvadoran teams FAS, Metapan and Aguila, and had a loan spell at New York Red Bulls, as well as for the El Salvador national team.

Police did not provide a motive for his killing.
