Former footballer Hakan Sukur wanted by Turkey over coup
Turkish authorities have issued a warrant for the arrest of former footballer Hakan Sukur over his links to a Muslim cleric accused by Turkey of masterminding last month’s failed coup.
Prosecutors have also demanded the arrest of Sukur’s father, and a court has ordered that both men’s assets be seized.
The former Blackburn striker, who served as a legislator before resigning from the ruling party in 2013 over a row, reportedly left Turkey last year. He has made no secret of his affiliation to cleric Fethullah Gulen.
The news came as it emerged that 32 diplomats ordered home to Turkey as part of an investigation into the coup had failed to return.
