Former governor of New York Mario Cuomo dies aged 82
Mario Cuomo, a son of Italian immigrants who became a spokesman for a generation of liberal Democrats during his three terms as governor of New York but couldn't quite bring himself to run for president, has died aged 82.
Mr Cuomo died of natural causes early yesterday due to heart failure at his home surrounded by his family, the same day his son Andrew started his second term, according to a statement released by the governor's office.
He served three terms in the governor's office between 1983 and 1994, and died on what is the 21st anniversary of his first inauguration.
Cuomo agonized so publicly over whether to run for the White House that he was dubbed "Hamlet on the Hudson."
