An advertisement for a nurse has sparked outrage after specifying " no Haitians" .

The advert, in the October 15 New City edition of the weekly Pennysaver news sheet, said Interim Healthcare was looking for a female nurse for a job in West Haverstraw, in Rockland County, New York.

It said: "Laid back nurse, no Haitians" and required that candidates also have state certifications.

Interim, an in-home nursing provider, issued a statement from its president Kalthleen McNally on its Facebook page and website, saying the ad was "totally unacceptable and is offensive to us".

She said an investigation would be carried out to look at what happened and make sure that it did not repeat itself.

"Please accept our sincere apology. In particular, we apologise to the entire Haitian community," Ms McNally said.

The Pennysaver Group said the ad was published by mistake and without "proper editing protocol" and had since been removed.

"We deeply apologise to our readers and the Haitian community," the company's chairman and chief operating officer said.

The state attorney general's office sent a letter to Interim Healthcare saying the ad "violates federal and state civil rights laws that prohibits discrimination in hiring on the basis of national origin".

The letter ordered the company to submit proof the advert had been discontinued and requested the names of all staff responsible for hiring nurses and nurses' aides and the names of those responsible for creating and distributing employment ads.

The Haitian American Nurses Association of Greater New York said it was appalled by the advert.

State senator David Carlucci, who represents part of Rockland County, called on the state's Labour Department to investigate.

West Haverstraw, a town of about 10,000, is about 40 miles north of New York City.
