Hair-cut trial told of 'forced sex' at Amish settlement

A woman has told a US court she left an Amish settlement because the bishop who is accused of orchestrating hair-cutting attacks last autumn had been forcing her to have sex with him.

The woman told jurors in Cleveland, Ohio, hearing the hate crimes trial of 16 members of a breakaway Amish group that she left the settlement four years ago because Sam Mullet Senior was forcing her and others to have sex with him.

The woman said Mullet told her he was trying to help her with her marriage.

Mullet is accused of organising the hair-cutting attacks over religious differences among the Amish but is not charged with any sex-related crimes.

Prosecutors say the alleged sexual "counselling" of wives by Mullet shows the control he had over his followers.
