A 44-year-old man has been injured in an apparent shark attack in the waters off Oahu, Hawaii, reports say.

The victim and another man were swimming to shore at Lanikai beach from the Mokulua Islands when the shark attacked, according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

The newspaper said the attack happened about 50 to 100 yards from shore.

The Star-Advertiser said the victim suffered injuries to his lower legs, but the other man was not injured.

Two nearby kayakers paddled the men to shore where Hawaii Fire Department staff and paramedics treated the victim. He was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

Authorities notified swimmers and cleared Kailua, Lanikai and Mokulua beaches.

Earlier this month, a surfer lost most of his left leg after a shark attacked him off Oahu's north shore.
