A man has filmed his wife giving birth to their baby son next to him as he drove through gridlocked Texas traffic in an unsuccessful effort to reach a birthing centre in time.

Jonathan and Lesia Pettijohn were stuck in traffic in Houston for more than an hour when her waters broke, forcing her to deliver their son Josiah herself.

Mr Pettijohn told KHOU-TV in Houston that they did not pull over because there was no apparent danger to his wife or the baby.

The four-minute video shows him calmly instructing his wife while she screams: "It's coming out! It's coming out!"

After the birth of 10lb Josiah he says: "We did it! High-five, babe!"

Staff were surprised to find Josiah already in hand when the couple arrived at the centre.
