The Taiwanese navy is searching for a submarine captain who fell into the sea during training, officials said today.
Major General Yu Sy-tue said 47-year-old Captain Chen Chi-tsung fell from the hull of a Dutch-made Zwaardvis class submarine on Monday when huge waves struck the ship.
The defence ministry said the accident took place 1.3 nautical miles from the southern military port of Zuoying.
It said Captain Chen took command of the submarine in September 2008.
